Sample Holder

A sample holder is a device that supports and positions a specimen for controlled observation or measurement, making it essential for reliable chemical analysis. It works by keeping the sample in a defined location and geometry while allowing excitation, detection, reagent access, or sensor contact; its material and design must suit the sample and experimental conditions. In chemistry, sample holders are used with techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, and diffraction to improve measurement consistency, protect instruments from contamination, and enable comparisons among samples. Their design can affect signal quality, background levels, and reproducibility, making holder selection an important part of analytical method development.

Sampling Methods: Sample Types

2024

Sampling materials are classified into three main types: solid, liquid, and gas. Solid samples include a variety of substances, such as sediments from water bodies, soil, metals, and biological tissues. Two standard methods for extracting sediments from water bodies are grab sampling and piston coring. Grab sampling involves using a device to collect a discrete sediment sample from the bottom of a water body with minimal disturbance. Grab samples do not always represent the entire area due to...
