Surface Moisture

Surface moisture is the thin layer of water present on a solid, liquid, or material interface, where it can alter chemical behavior even when the bulk material appears dry. It forms through adsorption of water molecules, capillary condensation, or direct contact with liquid water, with the amount governed by relative humidity, temperature, surface energy, and roughness. In chemistry, measuring and controlling surface moisture helps explain corrosion, oxidation, dissolution, crystallization, powder flow, adhesion, and catalytic activity. Moisture-sensitive synthesis, pharmaceutical formulation, materials processing, and environmental analysis therefore use surface-moisture data to improve reproducibility, stability, and performance.

Determination of Moisture Content in Soil

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Bradley Schmitz Soils normally contain a finite amount of water, which can be expressed as the “soil moisture content.” This moisture exists within the pore spaces in between soil aggregates (inter-aggregate pore space) and within soil aggregates (intra-aggregate pore space) (Figure 1). Normally this pore space is occupied by air and/or water. If all the pores are occupied by air, the...

Robust functional catechol coatings were produced in one step by direct reaction of the material known as HKUST with synthetic catechols under anaerobic conditions. The formation of homogeneous coatings surrounding the entire crystal is ascribed to the biomimetic catalytic activity of Cu(II) dimers on the external surface of the crystals.

Moisture Content and Bulking of Aggregate

2024

The moisture content of aggregates is a crucial factor in construction, particularly in concrete mixing, as it influences the total water required in the mix. Moisture content represents the water coated on the exterior surface of the aggregate existing in a saturated and surface-dry condition. The total water content of a moist aggregate is the sum of its moisture content and water absorption. When aggregates are exposed to rain or sit in stockpiles, they absorb moisture, which must be...

Here, we present an optimized methodology for producing mycelium-based composites (MBCs) from petrochemicals and polluting materials for thermal insulation applications. To become carbon-neutral and sustainable, biobased and compostable materials like mycelium bio-composite could be the solution. To determine if they meet the construction standards, several experiments were conducted.
