Beers List

The Beers List is a clinical reference that identifies potentially inappropriate medications for adults aged 65 and older, helping clinicians reduce preventable medication-related harm. Developed by the American Geriatrics Society, it evaluates drugs according to risks such as adverse drug events, drug-disease interactions, drug-drug interactions, and the need for dose adjustment in reduced kidney function. In practice, clinicians use the list alongside a patient’s diagnoses, treatment goals, life expectancy, and medication history rather than treating it as an absolute prohibition. Its application supports safer prescribing, deprescribing, medication review, and shared decision-making in geriatric care.

Absorbance and Fluorescence When light hits a substance, it is either absorbed, transmitted, or reflected. Typically, a substance interacts with a range of wavelengths of light, each one interacting with the molecules or atoms differently. A substance may absorb a specific range of wavelengths, reflect another range of wavelengths, and transmit the other wavelengths of light. When a molecule absorbs light, the energy is used in four different ways: (1) translation, which causes the molecule to...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Lab Setup for Beer’s LawExpand In this lab, you will combine aqueous solutions of FeCl3 and NaSCN to form an orange-red [Fe(NCS)]2+ complex. When FeCl3 is dissolved in water, the iron center is surrounded by six water molecules. This acidic complex easily loses protons from its water molecules, which can lead to iron hydroxides precipitating from solution. To prevent this, your solutions will include enough HNO3 to keep the iron in...

Direct listing is an alternative method for corporations to enter public markets by selling shares directly on a stock exchange. Unlike an initial public offering (IPO), direct listing does not involve issuing new shares or underwriters, reducing costs and allowing a market-driven price discovery process. This method suits companies with established brand recognition and strong financial stability.Benefits of Direct ListingDirect listing provides a cost-effective means for companies to go...

UV–Vis Spectroscopy: Beer–Lambert Law

The Beer-Lambert law describes the relationship between absorbance and concentration, which combines the principles established by scientists Johann Heinrich Lambert and August Beer. Lambert's law states that when light passes through a medium, the loss in intensity is directly proportional to the original intensity and the path length of the light. Beer's law proposed that the transmittance of a solution remains constant if the product of concentration and path length is constant. The modern...
