Carbon Sulfur Systems

Carbon-sulfur systems are chemical networks and compounds in which carbon and sulfur atoms interact through covalent bonds, shaping molecular structure, reactivity, and biological function. Their behavior depends on processes such as carbon-sulfur bond formation, sulfur oxidation and reduction, and thiol-disulfide exchange, which can alter molecular activity under changing chemical conditions. In clinical science, these systems are relevant to sulfur-containing amino acids, protein redox regulation, metabolic pathways, biomarker development, and drug design. Understanding their chemistry helps researchers interpret disease-associated changes in sulfur metabolism and develop analytical or therapeutic strategies.

The Sulfur Cycle

2019

Sulfur, an important element in the chemical makeup of proteins, is recycled through the atmosphere and aquatic and terrestrial environments. Found in the atmosphere as sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur is released by decaying organisms, weathered rocks, geothermal vents, volcanos, and burning fossil fuels. It is deposited into the ecosystem, cycled through the biotic community, and either released back into the atmosphere as gas or deposited in marine sediment for long-term storage and eventual...

Long and hollow glassy carbon microfibers were fabricated based on the pyrolysis of a natural product, human hair. The two fabrication steps of carbon microelectromechanical and carbon nanoelectromechanical systems, or C-MEMS and C-NEMS, are: (i) photolithography of a carbon-rich polymer precursor and (ii) pyrolysis of the patterned polymer precursor.

Synthesis of Ligand-free CdS Nanoparticles within a Sulfur Copolymer Matrix

Herein we present a method to synthesize ligand-free cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles based on a unique sulfur copolymer. The sulfur copolymer operates as a high temperature solvent and a sulfur source during the nanoparticle synthesis and stabilizes the nanoparticles after the reaction.

Sulfur Assimilation

2025

Sulfur is an essential element in biological systems, contributing to synthesizing key biomolecules, including amino acids such as cysteine and methionine, and cofactors such as coenzyme A and biotin. Microorganisms primarily assimilate sulfur as sulfate (SO₄²⁻) from the environment, which must undergo a series of biochemical transformations before it can be incorporated into cellular components. As sulfate is highly oxidized, it must undergo assimilatory sulfate reduction to become...

Phase I Reactions: Oxidation of Carbon-Heteroatom and Miscellaneous Systems

2025

Oxidative reactions are pivotal in metabolizing numerous compounds, including pharmaceutical drugs. These reactions often occur in carbon-heteroatom systems, such as carbon-nitrogen, carbon-sulfur, and carbon-oxygen. In carbon-nitrogen systems, aliphatic and aromatic amines can undergo oxidative reactions. Secondary and tertiary amines, like those found in tricyclic antidepressants, can undergo N-dealkylation, a process that involves the oxidation of the alkyl group. In addition, oxidative...
