Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to assess the heart and blood vessels without ionizing radiation. By measuring signals from hydrogen nuclei in tissues, CMR produces detailed images of cardiac structure, motion, blood flow, tissue composition, and perfusion; contrast-enhanced sequences can also reveal myocardial scar or inflammation. In clinical practice, CMR supports the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiomyopathies, ischemic heart disease, congenital abnormalities, valvular disorders, and vascular disease. Its quantitative and tissue-sensitive measurements help distinguish disease processes, guide treatment, and improve risk assessment.

Source: Frederick W. Damen and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...

In this video, we are showing how to label human embryonic stem cells (hESC) with manganese chloride (MnCl2) which can enter cells via voltage-gated calcium channels when the cells are biologically active. Additionally, we show the use of MnCl2 as cellular MRI contrast agent to determine the in vitro viability of hESC.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Henrik Sundén – Chalmers University of Technology Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a vital analysis technique for organic chemists. With the help of NMR, the work in the organic lab has been facilitated tremendously. Not only can it provide information about the structure of a molecule but also determine the content and purity of a sample. Compared with other commonly encountered techniques for organic chemists — such as thermal analysis and mass...

The sensitivity gain inherent to ultrahigh field magnetic resonance holds promise for high spatial resolution imaging of the heart. Here, we describe a protocol customized for functional cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) at 7 Tesla using an advanced multi-channel radio-frequency coil, magnetic field shimming and a triggering concept.

2012

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a powerful tool to evaluate the effectiveness of process equipment during operation. We discuss the use of MRI to visualize mixing in a static mixer. The application is relevant to personal care products, but can be applied to a broad range of food, chemical, biomass and biological fluids.
