Distal Tibia

The distal tibia is the lower end of the shinbone, forming a major part of the ankle joint and transmitting body weight from the leg to the foot. Its expanded articular surface, known as the tibial plafond, meets the talus, while the medial malleolus helps stabilize the ankle and the fibula completes the lateral support. In clinical practice, injuries to this region, including plafond and malleolar fractures, are assessed with physical examination and imaging to evaluate joint involvement, displacement, and alignment. Treatment may require immobilization or surgical fixation, with outcomes depending on restoration of stability and smooth joint motion.

Bones of the Lower Limb: Tibia and Fibula

The tibia is the main weight-bearing bone of the lower leg. It is larger than the fibula with which it is paired. The tibia is also the second longest bone in the body and is located right below the skin. The proximal end of the tibia forms the medial and the lateral condyle, which articulates with the condyles of the femur to form the knee joint. Between the articulating surfaces is the irregular elevated area known as the intercondylar eminence that serves as the inferior attachment point for...

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.
