Fluid Retention

Fluid retention is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in body tissues or compartments, a clinical finding that can signal disrupted fluid balance or underlying disease. It develops when changes in sodium and water handling, capillary hydrostatic or oncotic pressure, lymphatic drainage, or inflammation shift fluid from the circulation into tissues, often producing edema and weight gain. In clinical practice, recognizing its distribution, onset, and associated symptoms helps guide evaluation for conditions affecting the heart, kidneys, liver, or vascular system. Understanding these mechanisms supports targeted management, monitoring of treatment response, and prevention of complications caused by persistent or severe fluid accumulation.

Determination of the Calcium Retention Capacity of Isolated Mitochondria

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to assess mitochondrial calcium retention capacity by monitoring real-time changes in fluorescence as mitochondria uptake calcium. This assay is useful for studying mitochondrial function and calcium-related processes, including apoptosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Our goals were to design, manufacture and test ferromagnetic stents for endothelial cell capture. Ten stents were tested for fracture and 10 more stents were tested for retained magnetism. Finally, 10 stents were tested in-vitro and 8 more stents were implanted in 4 pigs to show cell capture and retention.

Source: Yates, J. G. E., et al. Production of High-Titer Recombinant Newcastle Disease Virus from Allantoic Fluid. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the purification and concentration of virus particles from clarified allantoic fluid collected from virus-infected embryonated chicken eggs. It showcases a series of filtration and separation steps, including depth filtration, tangential flow filtration, and density gradient ultracentrifugation to isolate intact viruses. The virus-rich...
