Dialyzer

A dialyzer is a medical device that filters blood outside the body, functioning as an artificial kidney during hemodialysis. Blood flows along one side of a semipermeable membrane while dialysate moves in the opposite direction, allowing diffusion to remove urea and other small waste molecules; pressure-driven ultrafiltration removes excess fluid while retaining blood cells and most proteins. In clinical care, dialyzers help manage advanced kidney failure by restoring electrolyte and fluid balance when renal function is insufficient. Their membrane materials, surface area, and flow conditions influence clearance, treatment efficiency, biocompatibility, and patient outcomes.

2011

In this video, we describe the characterization of multiprotein complexes (MPCs) by blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (BN-PAGE). In a first dimension, dialyzed cellular lysates are separated by BN-PAGE to identify individual MPCs. In a second dimension SDS-PAGE, MPCs of interest are further subdivided to analyze their constituents by immunoblotting.
