Head-to-toe Examination

Head-to-toe examination is a systematic physical assessment that evaluates a patient from the head through the extremities, helping clinicians establish baseline health and identify abnormalities. Using a consistent sequence, the examiner combines inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation with vital-sign measurement and focused questioning to assess body systems and compare findings with expected patterns. In clinical practice, this approach supports early recognition of deterioration, guides differential assessment, and documents changes over time. It is especially useful during comprehensive health assessments, admission screening, and follow-up care, while abnormal findings can prompt targeted examinations, diagnostic testing, or urgent intervention.

2024

The human leg comprises an intricate system of muscles that facilitate the movement of feet and toes. Within this system, the muscles are categorized into the anterior, lateral, and posterior compartments, each with a unique set of muscles carrying out specific functions. Anterior Compartment The anterior compartment includes muscles that contribute to the dorsiflexion of the foot. This compartment houses the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus muscles.

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The newborn exam is important in establishing a baby's baseline health status as they enter the world. Newborn providers have the unique opportunity to evaluate a patient for the very first time. They are also tasked with identifying congenital anomalies that require early intervention to promote a long and healthy life for the child. Many newborn anomalies, such as heart defects, are noted on prenatal ultrasound. However,...
