Host Agent Interaction

Host-agent interaction is the dynamic relationship between a human host and a biological agent, such as a pathogen, that determines whether exposure leads to colonization, infection, disease, or clearance. It occurs through linked processes including agent attachment or entry, host-cell recognition, replication, immune activation, and tissue responses, with outcomes shaped by host susceptibility and agent properties. In clinical research, studying these interactions helps explain disease progression, identify biomarkers, and reveal targets for antimicrobial or immune-based therapies. The same framework supports vaccine development, infection prevention, and evaluation of how changes in host immunity or agent behavior may alter clinical outcomes.

2015

Bacterial attachment to host cells is a key step during host colonization and infection. This protocol describes the generation of polymer-coupled recombinant adhesins as biomimetic materials which allow analysis of the contribution of individual adhesins to these processes, independent of other bacterial factors.

Source: Stones, D. H., et al. Biomimetic Materials to Characterize Bacteria-host Interactions. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates the use of bacteriomimetic beads to quantify bacterial adhesion to host epithelial cells under competitive conditions. It outlines the steps involved in treating the cells, lysing them, and plating serial dilutions to measure colony-forming units.
