Ligament Assessment

Ligament assessment is the clinical evaluation of connective tissues that stabilize joints and guide movement, helping identify sprains, tears, and instability. Clinicians combine patient history with inspection, palpation, range-of-motion testing, and targeted stress maneuvers that apply controlled forces to determine pain, laxity, and the integrity of specific ligaments. Imaging methods such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging can complement the physical examination by showing soft-tissue damage and associated injuries. In clinical practice, these findings support diagnosis, grading of injury severity, treatment planning, rehabilitation decisions, and assessment of recovery, while helping distinguish ligament injury from fractures, tendon disorders, or other causes of joint pain.

Pelvic organ prolapse affects millions of women worldwide and yet some common surgical interventions have failure rates as high as 40%. The lack of standard animal models to investigate this condition impedes progress. We propose the following protocol as a model for uterosacral ligament suspension and in vivo tensile testing.
