Lip Seal Technique

The lip seal technique is a clinical method for assessing or establishing complete, relaxed contact between the upper and lower lips, an important component of oral posture and functional evaluation. It relies on coordinated activity of the orbicularis oris and surrounding perioral muscles to bring the lips together without excessive strain, while supporting separation of the oral and nasal functions. Clinicians may use the technique during examinations of facial muscle balance, breathing patterns, swallowing, speech, and orthodontic conditions. Observing lip closure can help identify functional adaptations and guide individualized assessment, treatment planning, and monitoring of oral-motor outcomes.

2009

The technical aspects of performing LIPS (Luciferase Immunoprecipitation Systems) are described. The overall approach involves expressing chimeric genes encoding antigens fused to Renilla luciferase (Ruc) in mammalian cells. Crude Ruc-antigen extracts are then prepared and, without purification, employed in immunoprecipitation assays to quantify antibodies.
