Plantar Fascia

The plantar fascia is a strong band of connective tissue along the sole of the foot that supports the medial arch and helps distribute forces during standing and walking. It connects the calcaneus to the bases of the toes and tightens as the toes dorsiflex, using the windlass mechanism to elevate the arch and create a stable platform for push-off. In clinical practice, clinicians assess its structure and function when evaluating heel pain, particularly plantar fasciitis, and may use findings from physical examination and imaging to guide stretching, load management, footwear changes, or other treatments. Understanding its biomechanics supports more accurate diagnosis and rehabilitation planning.

2025

This protocol presents a step-by-step instruction for harvesting the superficial inferior epigastric artery fascia (SIEF) flap and wrapping it around the reconstructed peroneal nerve defect in rabbits. This surgical addition of vascularization to the tissue bed of nerve grafts is used to improve regeneration outcomes.

Effect of Change of Direction (COD) Movement on Plantar Pressure and Foot Balance in Bilateral Limbs

Construction of Constant-Load (Isotonic) and Constant-Velocity (Isokinetic) Torque-Velocity-Power Profiles In vivo for the Rat Plantar Flexors

2025

Here, we present a novel protocol to non-invasively measure the torque-angular velocity-power relationship in vivo in rat plantar flexors using transcutaneous muscle stimulation. This setup enables simple testing of isotonic muscle contractions on a force transducer/length controller system to better represent the constant-load nature of everyday movements.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The foot is a complex structure composed of numerous bones and articulations. It provides flexibility, is the essential contact point needed for ambulation, and is uniquely suited to absorb shock. Because the foot must support the weight of the entire body, it is prone to injury and pain. When examining the foot, it is important to remove shoes and socks on both sides, so that the entire foot can be inspected and compared.

Generating a Rat Model of Tibial Neuroma Transposition

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...
