Povidone Iodine

Povidone-iodine is a topical antiseptic formed by complexing iodine with povidone, a water-soluble polymer, to provide controlled antimicrobial activity in clinical settings. When the complex contacts tissue or surfaces, it gradually releases free iodine, which penetrates microorganisms and oxidizes essential proteins, nucleotides, and membrane components, leading to cell damage and inactivation. Clinicians use povidone-iodine for preoperative skin preparation, wound cleansing, and antisepsis of selected mucosal surfaces, where reducing microbial contamination can help lower infection risk. Its broad activity against many bacteria, fungi, and viruses makes it a useful component of infection-control protocols, although formulation and site-specific safety must guide its use.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Fluorination and Iodination of Benzene

2023

Bromination and chlorination of aromatic rings by electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions are easily achieved, but fluorination and iodination are difficult to achieve. Fluorine is so reactive that its reaction with benzene is difficult to control, resulting in poor yields of monofluoroaromatic products. To address this, Selectfluor reagent is used as a fluorine source in which a fluorine atom is bonded to a positively charged nitrogen. Unlike fluorine, iodine is highly unreactive for...
