Therapeutic Bronchoscopy

Therapeutic bronchoscopy is an interventional procedure that uses a bronchoscope to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the trachea, bronchi, and lungs, often providing a less invasive alternative to open surgery. Flexible or rigid bronchoscopes guide instruments and energy-based devices through the airways to remove obstructing tissue or secretions, widen narrowed passages, control bleeding, obtain targeted samples, or place airway stents. In clinical practice, these techniques can relieve breathlessness, restore airway patency, manage tumors and foreign bodies, and support individualized care for patients with airway obstruction or other complex pulmonary disorders.

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.

Therapeutic Index

2025

The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...
