Compound Light Microscope

A compound light microscope is an optical instrument that uses visible light and multiple lenses to magnify and resolve structures too small to see clearly with the unaided eye, making cellular organization accessible in developmental biology and other life sciences. Light passes through or reflects from a specimen, while the objective lens forms an enlarged image that the eyepiece magnifies further; illumination, focus, and lens choice influence contrast, magnification, and resolution. Researchers use compound light microscopes to examine cells, tissues, embryos, and model organisms, documenting changes in morphology, cell division, differentiation, and tissue organization. These observations connect visible developmental patterns with underlying biological processes.

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

Here, we fabricate 3D polymeric micro/nano structures in which both the shape and the molecular alignment can be engineered with nanometer scale accuracy by the use of direct laser writing. Light induced deformation of several types of liquid crystalline elastomer microstructures can be controlled in the microscopic scale.

Compound Administration II

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Compound administration is often an integral component of an animal study. Many factors need to be evaluated to ensure that the compound is delivered correctly. The route of administration affects the mechanisms of absorption. The characteristics of the substance to be introduced (the pH, viscosity, and concentration) may dictate which route of administration is selected.

Introduction to Light Microscopy

The light microscope is an instrument used by researchers in many different fields to magnify specimens to as much as a thousand times their original size. In its simplest form, it is composed of a clear lens that magnifies the sample and a light source to illuminate it. However, most light microscopes are much more complex and house numerous fine-tuned lenses with tightly controlled dimensions all within the body of the microscope itself and in components such as the objectives and eyepieces.
