Lung Morphology Analysis

Lung morphology analysis is the systematic examination of lung structure, organization, and shape to understand how these features change during development or disease. In developmental biology, researchers use imaging, histological staining, and quantitative measurements to assess airway branching, epithelial organization, alveolar formation, and overall tissue architecture across developmental stages. Comparing these morphological features reveals how genetic signals, cell behaviors, and tissue interactions shape the respiratory system. The approach supports studies of congenital lung abnormalities, organ development, and regenerative medicine by linking structural changes with developmental mechanisms and functional outcomes.

We have developed a computer program to analyze neuronal morphology. In combination with two existing open source analysis tools, our program performs Sholl analysis and determines the number of neurites, branch points, and neurite tips. The analyses are performed so that local changes in neurite morphology can be observed.

Non-surgical Intratracheal Instillation of Mice with Analysis of Lungs and Lung Draining Lymph Nodes by Flow Cytometry

We illustrate non-surgical delivery of test materials into the lungs of anesthetized mice via the trachea. This method permits lung exposure to bacterial and viral pathogens, cytokines, antibodies, beads, chemicals, or dyes. We further describe harvesting and processing of lungs and lung draining lymph nodes (LDLNs) for flow cytometry.
