Piezoelectric Stage

A piezoelectric stage is a precision positioning device that moves a mounted sample or instrument through extremely small, controlled distances, making it valuable when developmental biology experiments require accurate spatial and temporal control. It operates through the inverse piezoelectric effect: applying a voltage to a piezoelectric ceramic causes it to expand or contract, and coordinated actuators convert this deformation into rapid, repeatable motion along one or more axes. In developmental biology, piezoelectric stages support high-resolution microscopy, embryo and tissue manipulation, and automated imaging of dynamic cellular events. Their nanometer-scale positioning and fast response can improve image registration, reduce mechanical disturbance, and enable quantitative studies of morphogenesis and cell behavior.

One-step fabrication method for obtaining freestanding epitaxial double heterostructure is presented. This approach could achieve ZnO coverage with a higher number density than that of the epitaxial single heterostructure, leading to a piezoelectric nanogenerator with an increased output electrical performance.

Stages of Sleep

2024

Sleep progresses through distinct stages, each characterized by specific brain wave patterns and physiological responses ranging from wakefulness to stages of non-rapid eye movement, known as non-REM, to rapid eye movement, referred to as REM. Understanding these stages helps in recognizing how sleep supports various bodily and cognitive functions. Before sleep begins, in wakefulness, the brain exhibits primarily beta waves, which are high in frequency and low in amplitude, indicating alertness...
