Zona Pellucida Removal

Zona pellucida removal is the deliberate elimination of the glycoprotein coat surrounding mammalian oocytes and early embryos, a procedure used to study development and enable embryo manipulation. The zona pellucida can be removed mechanically, dissolved with acidic Tyrode’s solution, or digested enzymatically with proteases such as pronase, with the method and exposure time adjusted to limit cellular damage. In developmental biology, removal supports investigations of blastocyst hatching, cell adhesion, implantation, and embryo development, and can facilitate procedures such as embryo biopsy, aggregation, and transfer. Careful handling is essential because the zona protects embryos from environmental stress and premature adhesion.

Rotary Evaporation to Remove Solvent

Source: Dr. Melanie Pribisko Yen and Grace Tang — California Institute of Technology Rotary evaporation is a technique most commonly used in organic chemistry to remove a solvent from a higher-boiling point compound of interest. The rotary evaporator, or "rotovap", was invented in 1950 by the chemist Lyman C. Craig. The primary use of a rotovap is to dry and purify samples for downstream applications. Its speed and ability to handle large volumes of solvent make rotary evaporation a preferred...
