Analog Digital

Analog and digital describe two fundamental ways engineering systems represent information: analog signals vary continuously, whereas digital signals encode values as discrete levels, typically binary numbers. Analog-to-digital conversion samples a continuous voltage at defined time intervals, quantizes each measurement to a finite amplitude level, and represents the result as a digital code; digital-to-analog conversion reverses this process by reconstructing a varying signal from coded values. These approaches support sensors, communication systems, audio and video equipment, control systems, and embedded devices. Understanding their differences helps engineers manage bandwidth, noise, accuracy, processing requirements, and the reliable exchange of information between physical systems and computers.

Source: Dembowski, J. A., Deluca, N. A. Purification of Viral DNA for the Identification of Associated Viral and Cellular Proteins. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the infection of stationary-phase mammalian cells with HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus-1), followed by replication of the viral genome using host and viral replication machinery. A synthetic nucleoside analog is incorporated into newly synthesized viral DNA to label replicating genomes, which are subsequently isolated for...

Digital Microfluidics is a technique characterized by the manipulation of discrete droplets (~nL - mL) on an array of electrodes by the application of electrical fields. It is well-suited for carrying out rapid, sequential, miniaturized automated biochemical assays. Here, we report a platform capable of automating several proteomic processing steps.
