Summation Test

The Summation Test is an engineering method for checking whether individual contributions combine to produce an expected total, helping verify calculations, measurements, and system performance. It works by evaluating each component or input separately, adding the resulting values according to the governing model, and comparing the sum with a measured or independently calculated result; agreement supports the validity of the system representation. Engineers apply summation tests to assess load distributions, signal combinations, energy or material balances, and other systems in which multiple effects contribute to one outcome. The approach can reveal missing terms, incorrect assumptions, measurement errors, or non-additive behavior.

Summation Notation

Sigma notation, also known as summation notation, provides a concise method for representing the sum of a sequence of terms that follow a regular pattern. It utilizes the uppercase Greek letter sigma (∑), A typical expression is:In this form, k the index of summation is 1, the starting value, and n the ending value. The term ak represents the general term of the sequence. For example, the increasing sequence 5, 7, 9, ..., 23 over 10 terms can be expressed as:This simplifies the representation...

Lung Capacity

The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures. There are four defined lung volume measures: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in a normal breath. Inspiratory...

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.

Microbial Control and Monitoring Strategies for Cleanroom Environments and Cellular Therapies

The protocol summarizes the best practices to minimize microbial bioburden in a cleanroom environment and includes strategies such as environmental monitoring, process monitoring, and product sterility testing. It is relevant for manufacturing and testing facilities that are required to meet current good tissue practice standards and current good manufacturing practice standards.

Balancing Redox Equations

Electrochemistry is the science involved in the interconversion of electrical and chemical reactions. Such reactions are called reduction-oxidation, or redox reactions. These important reactions are defined by changes in oxidation states for one or more reactant elements and include a subset of reactions involving the transfer of electrons between reactant species. Electrochemistry as a field has evolved to yield sufficient insights on the fundamental principles of redox chemistry and multiple...
