Bulk Density

Bulk density is the mass of a material divided by its total occupied volume, including the spaces between particles, making it a key measure of how densely a solid or particulate system is packed. It depends on particle size and arrangement, porosity, moisture content, and compaction, so it can change even when the material itself remains unchanged. In engineering, bulk density helps assess soil stability, aggregate and powder handling, storage capacity, transport loads, and material performance. Measurements support calculations of void ratio, dry unit weight, and compaction quality in construction, geotechnical, and manufacturing applications.

Bulk Density of Aggregate

2024

Bulk density refers to the mass of aggregate particles that would fill a unit volume. The concept of bulk density originates from the inability to pack aggregate particles in a manner that completely eliminates void spaces. Hence, the term bulk refers to the volume that encompasses both the aggregates and the voids. This measurement is crucial when aggregates are batched by volume and is used to convert quantities by mass to volume. Most natural mineral aggregates, like sand and gravel,...

Bulk Modulus

The bulk modulus is a scientific term used to describe a material's resistance to uniform compression. It is the proportionality constant that links a change in pressure to the resulting relative volume change. This concept becomes clearer when an isotropic material element is visualized as a cube of unit volume. When this cube is subjected to normal stresses, it undergoes deformation, changing its shape into a rectangular parallelepiped with a different volume. The discrepancy between this...

We describe an endpoint digital assay for quantifying nucleic acids with a simplified (analog) readout. We measure bulk fluorescence of droplet-based digital assays using a standard qPCR machine rather than specialized instrumentation and confirm our results by microscopy.

Quantifying Bulk Autophagic Sequestration Activity in Mammalian Cells

2025

The video demonstrates an assay for assessing bulk autophagic sequestration activity in mammalian cells. It utilizes electroporation to release cytosolic proteins, including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The sequestered LDH and total cellular LDH fractions are determined to assess LDH sequestration, providing insights into the overall bulk sequestration activity.
