Double-d Coils

Double-D coils are paired D-shaped windings used to transfer electrical energy through a changing magnetic field, making them important in contactless power-transfer systems. When alternating current passes through the transmitter coil, it generates a magnetic field that induces voltage in a nearby receiver coil; the overlapping D-shaped windings help maintain magnetic coupling across an elongated charging area. Engineers use Double-D coils in wireless electric-vehicle charging and other inductive power-transfer devices where alignment, efficiency, and usable charging area are critical. Their geometry supports practical designs that can tolerate some lateral misalignment while transferring power without physical electrical contacts.

We demonstrate the fabrication, calibration and properties of two types of ion-selective microelectrodes (double-barreled and concentric) for measurement of ion concentrations in brain tissue. These are then used in the mouse hippocampal slice preparation to show that excitatory activity changes both extracellular potassium and sodium concentrations.

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...
