Impermeable Voids

Impermeable voids are enclosed pores, cavities, or discontinuities within an engineered material that do not permit fluids to pass through them, making them important in evaluating permeability, durability, and structural performance. They form when a void lacks connected pathways to the surrounding pore network, so water, air, or other fluids cannot flow across it even when pressure is applied. In engineering materials such as concrete, soils, ceramics, and manufactured composites, identifying impermeable voids helps distinguish isolated porosity from connected defects, assess transport behavior, and interpret strength or failure risks. Their distribution and volume can guide quality control, material design, and predictions of long-term service performance.

Total Voids in Concrete

2024

Total voids in concrete encompass gel water volume, capillary pores, and entrapped air. Gel water (retained within the cement hydration products) and physically entrapped or adsorbed water are significant for the hydration process. For complete hydration, it's estimated that the space needed for the products of a cubic centimeter of cement doubles. Capillary pores constitute the unoccupied space within the hydrated cement paste, with their size largely influenced by the water-to-cement ratio...

This article describes a new method to study mouse voiding behavior by incorporating video monitoring in the conventional void spot assay. This approach provides temporal, spatial, and volumetric information on the voiding events and details of mouse behavior during the light and dark phases of the day.

Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG) and Cystography are specialized radiographic procedures used to examine the structure and function of the bladder and urethra.Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG)A Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that assesses the anatomy and function of the lower urinary tract. It focuses on the bladder, bladder neck, and urethra, helping detect abnormalities such as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)—the backward or reverse flow of urine into the...

Determining Ciliary Function and Membrane Impermeability of the Pseudostratified Lung Airway Epithelium

2025

Air-liquid interface culture is commonly used to develop pseudostratified airway epithelium by differentiating primary normal human bronchial epithelial cells that mimic the apical side of the lung airway. Here, we describe an easy protocol for determining its quality by monitoring its biophysical properties, such as ciliary function and membrane integrity.

Application of Impermeable Barriers Combined with Candidate Factor Soaked Beads to Study Inductive Signals in the Chick

2016

Protocols using impermeable barriers to block induction events between tissues of the main body axis and flank in the chick embryo required for limb formation are described. Beads soaked in candidate inductive signals are used to overcome the effect of barrier placement and analysis of gene expression confirms this.
