Multimodal Data Capture

Multimodal data capture is the coordinated acquisition of information from different sources, such as cameras, microphones, force sensors, and environmental instruments, to represent a system more completely than any single measurement can. In engineering workflows, sensors record complementary physical signals, while synchronization, calibration, and data fusion align measurements across time, space, and scale so algorithms can identify relationships and meaningful patterns. This approach supports robotics, predictive maintenance, digital twins, quality inspection, and human-machine interaction by improving situational awareness, fault detection, and model accuracy. Its value increases as engineered systems become more connected and require integrated evidence for design, monitoring, and control.

A wide-field Fourier-transform microscope, based on a compact and ultra-stable birefringent interferometer, allows the parallel acquisition of spectra for all pixels of a 2D detector. The time-domain approach enables the disentanglement of photoluminescence and Raman signals, and allows rapid Raman mapping (~5 ms/pixel) with ~1-µm spatial and 23-cm-1 spectral resolution.
