Orientation Prediction

Orientation prediction is the estimation of an object’s current or future attitude, including its rotation about the roll, pitch, and yaw axes, from measurements and a motion model. In engineering systems, gyroscopes track angular velocity while accelerometers and, when available, magnetometers provide reference information; filtering or sensor-fusion algorithms combine these signals to update orientation estimates and reduce drift and noise. The resulting predictions support stabilization, guidance, robotic motion planning, inertial navigation, and augmented-reality tracking. Reliable orientation estimates are essential when systems must respond to changing motion, delayed measurements, or uncertain sensor data.

Predicting Molecular Geometry

VSEPR Theory for Determination of Electron Pair Geometries The following procedure uses VSEPR theory to determine the electron pair geometries and the molecular structures: Write the Lewis structure of the molecule or polyatomic ion. Count the number of electron groups (lone pairs and bonds) around the central atom. A single, double, or triple bond counts as one region of electron density. Identify the electron-pair geometry based on the number of electron groups: linear, trigonal planar,...

Oriented Surfaces

A surface is called orientable if a consistent choice of unit normal vector can be made at every point on the surface. A thin soap film stretched across a wire loop provides a familiar example. The film separates the air on one side from the air on the other, so one side can be selected as positive and the opposite side as negative. Once this choice is made, a unit normal vector can be assigned smoothly across the entire surface. At each point on the soap film, a unit normal vector points...

Patient-specific Modeling of the Heart: Estimation of Ventricular Fiber Orientations

2013

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

Location and Orientation of the Heart

The human heart, despite its modest size and weight, is an organ of remarkable strength and endurance. Roughly the size of a fist, the heart weighs between 250 and 350 grams and is nestled within the mediastinum, the medial cavity of the thorax. It extends obliquely for about 12 to 14 cm, resting on the superior surface of the diaphragm. The heart is positioned anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum, with two-thirds of its mass lying to the left of the midsternal line.

Determining Spatial Orientation of Rock Layers with the Brunton Compass

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Most rock units exhibit some form of planar surfaces or linear features. Examples include bedding-, fault-, fracture-, and joint-surfaces, and various forms of foliation and mineral alignment. The spatial orientation of these features form the critical raw data used to constrain models addressing the origin and subsequent deformation of rock units. Although now over 100 years since its invention and introduction, the Brunton...
