Phase Contrast Mri

Phase-contrast MRI is a magnetic resonance imaging technique that measures the velocity and direction of moving material, especially blood or cerebrospinal fluid, while also producing anatomical images. It works by applying motion-sensitive bipolar magnetic-field gradients that cause moving spins to accumulate phase shifts proportional to their velocity; paired acquisitions convert these shifts into quantitative velocity maps and flow rates. In engineering and biomedical research, phase-contrast MRI supports noninvasive analysis of fluid dynamics in vessels, the heart, and the brain, helping characterize circulation and transport through complex geometries. Its quantitative data also aid validation of computational flow models and medical device designs.

Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Assess Blood Flow in the Arteries of a Rat

2025

Source: Chiu, S., et al. Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Rat Common Carotid Artery. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to measure blood flow in the common carotid artery of a rat. After securing an anesthetized rat on the MRI bed and ensuring stable physiological parameters, the common carotid artery is scanned to capture images at defined intervals. Blood flow is then computed from these images to evaluate changes...

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy

Phase-Contrast Microscopes In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...
