Stationary Bicycle Generator

A stationary bicycle generator is an exercise bicycle modified to convert human pedaling into electrical energy, linking mechanical power generation with practical engineering design. As the rider turns the crank, a belt, chain, or friction drive rotates an electrical generator, where electromagnetic induction produces current; rectifiers and voltage regulators can condition that output for a battery, electronic device, or resistive load. Engineers evaluate torque, rotational speed, generator efficiency, energy storage, and electrical demand to optimize the system. These devices provide a hands-on model of energy conversion and can support demonstrations of sustainable power, human-powered charging, and the performance limits of small-scale generation.

2014

A protocol for the diastereoselective one-pot preparation of cis-N-Ts-iodoaziridines is described. The generation of diiodomethyllithium, addition to N-Ts aldimines and cyclization of the amino gem-diiodide intermediate to iodoaziridines is demonstrated. Also included is a protocol to rapidly and quantitatively assess the most appropriate stationary phase for purification by chromatography.

Gas Chromatography: Types of Columns and Stationary Phases

2024

Gas chromatography (GC) relies on stationary phases to separate and analyze components in a sample. There are two main types of stationary phases: liquid and solid. Liquid stationary phases are non-volatile, thermally stable, and chemically inert liquids coated onto the column. Solid stationary phases are particles of adsorbent material, such as silica gel or molecular sieves. For an analyte to remain on the column for a sufficient amount of time, it must exhibit some level of compatibility (or...

Preparation of Stable Bicyclic Aziridinium Ions and Their Ring-Opening for the Synthesis of Azaheterocycles

Bicyclic aziridinium ions such as 1-azoniabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane tosylate were generated from 2-[4-tolenesulfonyloxybutyl]aziridine, which was utilized for the preparation of substituted piperidines and azepanes via regio- and stereospecific ring-expansion with various nucleophiles. This highly efficient protocol allowed us to prepare diverse azaheterocycles including natural products such as fagomine, febrifugine analogue and balanol.

Diels–Alder Reaction Forming Bridged Bicyclic Products: Stereochemistry

2023

Diels–Alder reactions between cyclic dienes locked in an s-cis configuration and dienophiles yield bridged bicyclic products. Dienophiles with one or more electron-withdrawing substituents form stereochemically different products in which the substituents are oriented in an endo (towards) or exo (away) configuration relative to the double bond. The endo isomer is formed faster and is the kinetic product. The exo isomer is more stable and is the thermodynamic product.

DC Generator

An alternator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy that varies sinusoidally, resulting in AC current. Meanwhile, a DC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, which are DC pulses with the same polarity. The construction of a DC generator is similar to that of an alternator, except that the pair of slip rings is replaced by a single split ring, also called a commutator. The commutator functions like a periodic rotary switch; it changes the contacts with the...
