Structural Engineering

Structural engineering is the branch of engineering that analyzes and designs buildings, bridges, towers, dams, and other structures so they safely carry loads throughout their intended service life. It works by evaluating forces such as gravity, wind, earthquakes, and temperature changes, then selecting forms, materials, and connections that transfer those forces to the ground while limiting stress, deformation, and instability. Engineers use mechanics, material behavior, mathematical modeling, codes, and experimental testing to predict structural performance and guide construction. The field supports safe, efficient infrastructure and increasingly addresses resilience, sustainability, rehabilitation of existing structures, and innovative materials under changing environmental demands.
