Vortex Breakdown

Vortex breakdown is a sudden structural change in a swirling fluid flow, often marked by a stagnation point and a region of reversed axial motion. It occurs when strong rotation, pressure gradients, and flow confinement destabilize the vortex core, producing recirculation, unsteady motion, or a breakdown bubble downstream. In engineering, this phenomenon influences combustor aerodynamics, turbomachinery, swirling jets, and internal flows, where it can either enhance fuel-air mixing and flame stabilization or cause pressure losses, vibration, and performance degradation. Understanding vortex breakdown helps researchers predict flow instabilities and design systems that control or exploit complex three-dimensional fluid behavior.

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...

Breakdown of the Phillips Curve (1970s)

2026

During the 1960s, a stable trade-off between the inflation rate and the unemployment rate was observed, as represented by the Phillips curve. According to this relationship, low unemployment was generally associated with high inflation, while high unemployment was associated with low inflation. However, during the 1970s, this relationship broke down.A sharp rise in oil prices in 1973 led to higher production costs across various industries. At the same time, unemployment also increased,...

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy performed on thin organ and tumor tissue successfully detected natural elements and artificially injected gadolinium (Gd), issued from Gd-based nanoparticles. Images of chemical elements reached a resolution of 100 μm and quantitative sub-mM sensitivity. The compatibility of the setup with standard optical microscopy emphasizes its potential to provide multiple images of a same biological tissue.
