Algal Feeding Protocol

An algal feeding protocol is a standardized procedure for providing algae to organisms or experimental systems under controlled environmental conditions. It specifies the algal species or biomass, feeding concentration, timing, preparation, and monitoring needed to deliver consistent nutrients while limiting contamination or uncontrolled growth. In environmental research, these protocols support studies of aquatic food webs, nutrient transfer, organismal growth, and water-quality responses. By controlling algal inputs and recording outcomes, researchers can compare treatments, reproduce experiments, and evaluate how changes in algal availability influence ecosystems, aquaculture systems, and other biologically managed environments.

An experimental methodology is presented to compare the performance of small (100 L) and large (1,000 L) scale reactors designed for algae remediation of landfill wastewater. System characteristics, including surface area to volume ratio, retention time, biomass density, and wastewater feed concentrations, can be adjusted based on application.
