Building Ventilation

Building ventilation is the controlled exchange of indoor and outdoor air to maintain indoor environmental quality, making it important for occupant health, comfort, and building performance. It works through natural airflow or mechanical systems that supply outdoor air, remove or dilute pollutants and moisture, and regulate pressure, often using fans, ducts, dampers, and filters. In environmental research and practice, ventilation assessment helps evaluate carbon dioxide levels, particulate matter, contaminants, humidity, and energy use under different occupancy and weather conditions. Effective design can reduce exposure to airborne pollutants and support healthier, more energy-efficient buildings, while inadequate or excessive ventilation can compromise air quality or waste energy.

Mechanical Ventilation II: Invasive Ventilation

2025

Ventilators are essential medical equipment used to aid patients with respiratory difficulties. Their primary function is to assist or replace spontaneous breathing by providing mechanical ventilation. There are two general classes of mechanical ventilators: negative-pressure and positive-pressure ventilators. Negative-Pressure Ventilators Negative-pressure ventilators create a vacuum around the chest or body to draw air into the lungs, simulating breathing. This method does not require an...

Mechanical Ventilation III: Noninvasive Ventilation

2025

Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) are essential methods in respiratory care. These ventilation techniques offer unique benefits for patients with various respiratory conditions, providing adequate support without requiring intubation. Let's explore how each method is crucial in improving patient outcomes and enhancing respiratory therapy. Noninvasive Positive-Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV)

A Structured Approach to Extubation in Mechanically Ventilated Rats

2025

This study proposes a structured extubation approach tailored to rat models of mechanical ventilation (MV). The approach facilitates a smooth transition from MV to spontaneous breathing while minimizing extubation-related complications. Standardization of weaning, airway management, and post-extubation care enhances the reliability and reproducibility of experimental studies.

A Novel Rescue Technique for Difficult Intubation and Difficult Ventilation

We describe a technique to maintain oxygenation and ventilation using an endotracheal tube inserted nasally to the level of the naso-pharynx while sealing the mouth and nares for successful positive pressure ventilation.

How to Build a Dichoptic Presentation System That Includes an Eye Tracker

We recently proposed a method that allows dichoptic visual stimulus presentation and binocular eye tracking simultaneously1. The key is the combination of an infrared eye tracker and the corresponding infrared-transparent mirrors. This manuscript provides an in depth protocol for initial setup and everyday operation.
