Taiwanese Bat Species

Taiwanese bat species are the bat species found across Taiwan, a biologically important group whose diversity reflects the island’s forests, caves, farms, and urban habitats. They navigate and locate prey primarily through echolocation, emitting high-frequency calls whose returning echoes reveal nearby objects and insects, while roosting behavior and seasonal movement link populations to environmental conditions. Studying these species helps researchers assess habitat quality, insect populations, and ecosystem change because bats respond to alterations in vegetation, cave environments, and human land use. This knowledge supports biodiversity surveys, habitat protection, and evidence-based environmental management in Taiwan.

Mammalian integument contains solvent-extractable lipids that can provide chemical compositions characteristic of individual species. This paper presents a routine method for separating broad lipid classes isolated from integumentary tissues using thin layer chromatography and determining the triacylglyceride profile by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

Simulating Colonization and Extinction on Islands ExpandForm groups of three. One member of the group will simulate colonization by throwing balls into the groups of cups representing the islands. Another will simulate extinction by rolling dice to randomly remove balls from the cups. The third group member will record the data. Take time to familiarize yourself with the four island stations. NOTE: There are two large islands with 12 cups and two small islands with 6 cups. Two of the stations...

Species Distribution and Biogeography - Concepts

Species Distribution Biogeography is the study of species distribution across geographic space and the processes that shape these distributions. This discipline is based on the assumption that each species within a location must have immigrated from another geographic area or evolved from a local species. Within each habitat, a variety of biotic and abiotic factors act on individual species to shape birth, death, immigration, and emigration rates. To avoid local extinction, the combined birth...
