Viscum Album

Viscum album, commonly known as European mistletoe, is a perennial hemiparasitic plant that grows on the branches of woody hosts and influences forest and landscape ecosystems. Its specialized haustoria penetrate host tissues, allowing the plant to obtain water and mineral nutrients while its green leaves perform photosynthesis. White berries are dispersed mainly by birds, which help establish mistletoe on new host trees and support wider distribution. By altering host resource use and providing food and habitat for wildlife, Viscum album contributes to plant–animal interactions, biodiversity, and the ecological structure of temperate environments.

This video article demonstrates the establishment of organotypic retinal wholemount cultures and a cytospin procedure for analysis of exogenously induced effects. Organotypic retinal wholemount cultures mimic the in vivo situation and significantly facilitate the accessibility of murine retinas for experimental manipulations while circumventing the disadvantages of classical murine animal models.
