Drosophila Functional Assay

A Drosophila functional assay is an experimental test that determines how a gene, genetic variant, or molecular pathway affects an observable trait in the fruit fly, a powerful model for genetics research. Researchers alter or express a gene in defined tissues or developmental stages, then measure phenotypes such as viability, morphology, behavior, or fertility against appropriate controls. Because many fly genes and cellular pathways are conserved across animals, these assays can connect genotype with biological function and reveal mechanisms underlying development, disease, and cellular regulation. They also support genetic screening, validation of candidate genes, and comparative analysis of conserved biological processes.

The feeding circuit in Drosophila melanogaster larvae serves a simple yet powerful model that allows changes in feeding rate to be correlated with alterations in the stomatogastric neural circuitry. This circuit is composed of central serotonergic neurons that send projections to the mouth hooks as well as the foregut.
