Infection Dynamics

Infection dynamics describes how pathogens spread, replicate, interact with hosts, and change over time within individuals and populations. These dynamics arise from processes including pathogen transmission, cellular infection, immune recognition, replication, clearance, and the development of protective or harmful inflammation. In immunology and infection research, analyzing factors such as pathogen load, host susceptibility, infectious period, and immune response helps explain why infections resolve, persist, or progress to disease. Mathematical models, experimental systems, and clinical data use these principles to evaluate vaccines, antimicrobial treatments, transmission control strategies, and mechanisms of immune protection.

Source: Valentine, M. E., et al. Generation of In-Frame Gene Deletion Mutants in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Testing for Virulence Attenuation in a Simple Mouse Model of Infection. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the use of bioluminescence to visualize and compare the in vivo behavior of virulent and attenuated bacterial strains in mice. It outlines the preparation of bioluminescent bacterial suspensions and their intraperitoneal injection into mice. The virulent strain exhibits...

Monitoring Neutrophil Recruitment Dynamics and Bacterial Burden at the Infection Site in a Murine Model

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo imaging to study the neutrophil recruitment dynamics at an infection site in an immunocompromised, transgenic mouse with GFP-expressing neutrophils. It involves injecting luminescent bacteria to cause an infection. This leads to neutrophil recruitment to the infection site, whose tracking is done by imaging.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...

Dynamic Equilibrium

2020

A reversible chemical reaction represents a chemical process that proceeds in both forward (left to right) and reverse (right to left) directions. When the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal, the concentrations of the reactant and product species remain constant over time and the system is at equilibrium. A special double arrow is used to emphasize the reversible nature of the reaction. The relative concentrations of reactants and products in equilibrium systems vary greatly;...

Use of Galleria mellonella as a Model Organism to Study Legionella pneumophila Infection

The larva of the wax moth Galleria mellonella was recently established as an in vivo model to study Legionella pneumophila infection. Here, we demonstrate fundamental techniques to characterize the pathogenesis of Legionella in the larvae, including inoculation, measurement of bacterial virulence and replication as well as extraction and analysis of infected hemocytes.
