Juvenile Zebrafish

Juvenile zebrafish are post-embryonic stages of Danio rerio that provide a small, transparent vertebrate system for studying immune development and infection. During this period, innate defenses continue to function while lymphoid organs mature and adaptive immune responses become established, enabling investigations of host-pathogen interactions across developing immune compartments. Their external development, optical accessibility, and suitability for controlled pathogen exposure allow researchers to monitor inflammation, leukocyte behavior, microbial dissemination, and tissue repair in living animals. Juvenile zebrafish therefore support infection modeling, immune-function assays, and evaluation of antimicrobial or immunomodulatory treatments, connecting cellular mechanisms with organism-level outcomes.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular model for studying genetics and developmental biology. The transparency of these animals at early developmental stages permits the direct visualization of tissue morphogenesis at the cellular level. Furthermore, zebrafish are amenable to genetic manipulation, allowing researchers to determine the effect of gene expression on the development of a vertebrate with a high degree of genetic similarity to humans. This video provides a brief overview of...

This protocol outlines the primary steps for obtaining germ-free (GF) fish embryos and maintaining them from larvae until the juvenile stage, including sampling and detecting their sterile status. The use of GF models with infection is important for understanding the role of microbes in host health.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a powerful vertebrate model system for studying development, modeling disease, and screening for novel therapeutics. Due to their small size, large numbers of zebrafish can be housed in the laboratory at low cost. Although zebrafish are relatively easy to maintain, special consideration must be given to both diet and water quality to in order to optimize fish health and reproductive success. This video will provide an overview of zebrafish husbandry and...
