Kinetic Microplate Reader

A kinetic microplate reader is an automated instrument that repeatedly measures optical signals from multiple wells over time, enabling scientists to monitor dynamic biochemical and cellular processes. Depending on the assay, it detects changes in absorbance, fluorescence, or luminescence while controlling conditions such as temperature, mixing, and measurement intervals. In immunology and infection research, kinetic microplate readers track enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay reactions, microbial growth, pathogen-associated activity, and immune-cell responses. The resulting time-course data reveal reaction rates, growth patterns, and treatment effects, supporting quantitative analysis of host-pathogen interactions, antimicrobial activity, and immune mechanisms.

Introduction to the Microplate Reader

2023

The microplate reader is a multimodal instrument that allows for a variety of experiments to be performed and measured simultaneously. Microplate readers can make absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence measurements. Multiwell plates are integral to the microplate reader and allow for many experiments to be performed at once. Regardless of the assay type, experiments on the plate reader utilize a standard curve to determine the experimental values. This curve uses samples of known...

2025

This video describes an in vitro fluorescence-based microplate assay to study the degradation kinetics of a fluorescently-labeled misfolded luciferase mutant protein expressed in the nuclei of transfected mammalian cells. The assay involves the treatment of cells expressing the fluorescent mutant protein with a translation inhibitor and a proteasome inhibitor to assess the proteasome-mediated degradation of the misfolded protein.

2012

This study describes a novel microplate assay that measures FV coagulation activity during fibrin clot formation in human plasma which has not been reported previously. The method uses a kinetic microplate reader to continuously measure the change in absorbance at 405nm during fibrin clot formation in human plasma.

Kinetic Energy

2019

Kinetic energy is the ability of an object in motion to do work or enact change. It can take on many forms. For instance, water flowing down a waterfall has kinetic energy. In biological systems, particles of light travel and are absorbed by plants to create chemical energy. Animals consume the chemical energy and give off molecules that carry their scent through the air. They also generate kinetic energy when they run away from predators. Entire systems also possess kinetic energy, like the...
