Mouse Lung Imaging

Mouse lung imaging is a set of microscopy and visualization methods used to examine lung structure, cell behavior, and disease processes in living or fixed mice. Intravital microscopy commonly combines fluorescent labels, optical access through a thoracic window or exposed lung, and motion-control strategies to track immune cells, pathogens, and tissue changes during respiration. These approaches help researchers study leukocyte recruitment, host-pathogen interactions, inflammation, and pulmonary injury in real time. By linking cellular dynamics with infection outcomes and immune responses, mouse lung imaging supports mechanistic studies and evaluation of vaccines, antimicrobial treatments, and other interventions.

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.
