Virus Isolation Assay

Virus isolation assay is a laboratory method used to recover and identify infectious virus from a clinical or environmental sample, making it distinct from tests that detect only viral genetic material or antigens. In a typical assay, the sample is inoculated onto susceptible cell cultures, where viral replication may produce characteristic cytopathic effects; researchers then confirm the isolate using immunostaining, antigen detection, or molecular testing. In immunology and infection research, virus isolation assays help assess infectivity, characterize viral strains, evaluate host-cell susceptibility, and measure the effects of antiviral treatments. They also provide essential material for studying immune responses, transmission, and pathogen biology.
