Capnography

Capnography is the continuous measurement and graphical display of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in exhaled breath, providing a real-time view of ventilation and a patient’s respiratory status. Most clinical systems use infrared spectroscopy to detect CO2, producing a capnogram whose waveform and end-tidal CO2 value reflect changes in gas exchange during the respiratory cycle. In medicine, capnography helps confirm tracheal tube placement, monitor patients during anesthesia and sedation, identify hypoventilation or airway obstruction, and assess resuscitation. Because it responds rapidly to changes in breathing, it can support earlier intervention than intermittent oxygen or pulse measurements alone.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of capnography sampling lines used in conjunction with a portable bedside capnography monitor. Sampling lines from 7 manufacturers were evaluated for tensile strength, rise time, and ETCO2 accuracy as a function of respiratory rate or supplemental oxygen flow rate.

Multisystem Monitoring of Epileptic Abnormalities in Rabbit: A Method for Simultaneous Video EEG, ECG, Capnography, and Oximetry Recording During Induced Seizures

2025

In this video, we demonstrate a multisystem monitoring method to evaluate neurological and cardiorespiratory abnormalities during intravenous injection of a seizure-inducing drug. The simultaneous monitoring of video EEG, ECG, oximetry, and capnography parameters helps to understand the real-time physiological changes associated with epileptic seizures.

Prepping Conscious Rabbit Model for Simultaneous Video-EEG-ECG-Oximetry-Capnography for Experimental Interventions: A Procedure to Implant EEE-ECG Electrodes and Attach Respiratory Probes in Rabbit Model

Here, we describe two measures of pulmonary function – barometric plethysmography, which allows the measurement of lung volume, and volumetric capnography, a tool to measure the anatomic dead space and airways uniformity. These techniques may be used independently or combined to assess airways function at different lung volumes.
