Childhood Myopia

Childhood myopia is a refractive error in which distant objects appear blurred because the eye focuses light in front of, rather than directly on, the retina. It commonly develops as the growing eye elongates, although corneal curvature, lens power, genetics, and visual environment also influence its progression. In medicine, monitoring refractive error and axial length helps clinicians identify worsening myopia and assess interventions such as corrective lenses, contact lenses, or pharmacologic treatment. Early management can improve visual function and may reduce the likelihood of high myopia, which is associated with greater lifetime risks to ocular health.

Source: Jiang, X., et al. Inducement and evaluation of a murine model of experimental myopia. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a procedure for inducing myopia in a mouse through the installation of a custom lens frame. The frame is secured to the exposed skull with dental adhesive, and concave lenses are inserted to shift the focal point behind the retina. This setup stimulates eyeball elongation leading to myopia.

We demonstrate the effect of scleral crosslinking with riboflavin and UVA on an axial elongation rabbit eye. Axial elongation was induced in 13 day-old New Zealand rabbits (male and female) by suturing their right eye eyelids (tarsorrhaphy).

Marketing Myopia

Marketing myopia is a concept that highlights the shortsightedness of businesses when they focus too narrowly on their products or services rather than understanding and addressing the broader needs and wants of their customers. This myopic view can lead to a failure to recognize changes in consumer preferences and market dynamics, ultimately hindering long-term success. In order to avoid marketing myopia, businesses should adopt a customer-centric approach, continually adapt to evolving...

Early childhood is a period of rapid motor development in which children refine gross and fine motor skills. These abilities increase independence and support social interaction, play, and learning.Gross Motor SkillsGross motor skills involve coordinated movements of large muscle groups, including running, jumping, and climbing. By about 2.5 years, most children can jump with both feet. Hopping, which requires greater balance and strength, usually emerges around age 4.Stair climbing also...
