Retinal Biomarkers

Retinal biomarkers are measurable structural, vascular, cellular, or molecular features of the retina that indicate disease presence, activity, or progression, making them valuable in medicine because the retina provides a noninvasive view of nervous-system health. They are assessed through methods such as fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, OCT angiography, and analysis of retinal cells or fluids, revealing changes in tissue thickness, retinal layers, blood flow, or molecular composition. Clinicians and researchers use these markers to detect and monitor conditions including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and neurodegenerative disease. Standardized retinal biomarkers can support earlier diagnosis, treatment selection, and objective measurement of therapeutic response.

The retina shares prominent similarities with the brain and thus represents a unique window to study vasculature and neuronal structure in the brain non-invasively. This protocol describes a method to study dementia using retinal imaging techniques. This method can potentially aid in diagnosis and risk assessment of dementia.

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

An Overview of bGDGT Biomarker Analysis for Paleoclimatology

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Throughout this series of videos, natural samples were extracted and purified in search of organic compounds, called biomarkers, that can relate information on climates and environments of the past. One of the samples analyzed was sediment. Sediments accumulate over geologic time in basins, depressions in the Earth into which sediment flows through the action of fluid (water or air), movement, and gravity. Two main types...

This video demonstrates three types of morphometric analyses of the retina, which include measuring the inner nuclear layer thickness, quantifying the number of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and measuring the sizes of RGCs. The technique can offer a simple but scientific platform for morphometric analyses.
