Donor Aorta Dissection

Donor aorta dissection is a separation of the aortic wall in tissue obtained from an organ donor, a finding that can affect vascular graft suitability and recipient safety. It occurs when blood or preservation fluid enters through an intimal defect and tracks within the media, creating a false channel that may weaken the vessel or obstruct branch arteries. In transplant medicine, recognizing dissection during donor evaluation, vascular procurement, graft preparation, or implantation helps guide tissue selection and surgical planning. Careful inspection and appropriate management can reduce the risk of anastomotic failure, impaired graft perfusion, and other vascular complications.

Here we present a protocol describing oxygenated ex situ machine perfusion of donor liver grafts. This article contains a step by step protocol to procure and prepare the liver graft for machine perfusion, prepare the perfusion fluid, prime the perfusion machine and perform oxygenated normothermic machine perfusion of the liver graft.

Porcine Aorta Isolation: A Surgical Procedure to Excise the Thoracic Aorta From Miniature Pigs for Downstream Analysis

This paper presents a flow cytometry-based method to investigate the immune composition of aortas. The paper also illustrates an additional technique that allows examining surrounding adventitia and vessel wall separately. This method opens possibilities to perform phenotypical analyses of aortic leukocytes and apply several immunological assays for atherosclerosis studies.
