Enhanced Recovery Programs

Enhanced Recovery Programs are coordinated, evidence-based care pathways that support patients before, during, and after surgery to reduce physiologic stress and promote faster, safer recovery. They combine preoperative education and optimization with multimodal pain control, careful fluid management, early oral intake, and prompt mobilization, replacing isolated interventions with a standardized, team-based process. Used across many surgical specialties, these programs can shorten hospital stays, reduce complications, limit reliance on opioids, and improve patient participation in recovery. Their emphasis on measurable outcomes and coordinated transitions also supports more efficient perioperative care and continued refinement of surgical practice.

Programmed electrical stimulation provides the ability to determine conduction properties of the heart, and the possibility to induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmias using various pacing protocols. Using a transvenous catheter, intracardiac electrogram recordings can be obtained in mice following programmed electrical stimulation protocols to identify arrhythmogenic substrates.

Here, we present protocols for 1) the laboratory captive propagation of the federally endangered Miami blue butterfly (Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri), and 2) assessing basic life history information such as immature development time and number of larval stadia. Both methods can be adapted for use with other ex situ conservation programs.
