The biological interventions with the manipulation and use of native, beneficial microorganisms are recognized as an alternative, sustainable, non-hazardous, and eco-friendly strategy in industrial applications such as agriculture, bioremediation, hydrocarbon degradation, and wastewater treatment.
Agriculture industry:
The application of microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) as biocontrol agents is considered as organic farming carried out to increase productivity and disease resistance in crops in modern agriculture. Their use as biofertilizers and bio-pesticides could augment and terminate the use of chemical pesticides in the future.
Bioremediation industry:
Microorganisms and their biomolecules like biosurfactants and enzymes are used in bioremediation. Beneficial fungi and bacteria help in the remediation of sites contaminated with heavy metals, oil spills, hydrocarbons, wastewater, etc.
Microbial diversity:
Microbial diversity encompassing a spectrum of various types of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, algae, etc.) is a promising resource. Microbes have not just adapted to extreme environments on earth but can also consume just about anything, including metals, chemicals, pesticides, petroleum, and hydrocarbons all of which are toxic to us. Hence these microorganisms play a pivotal role to ameliorate the effects of naturally occurring and man-made disturbances in environments.
Microbe-plant interaction:
Plants are constantly challenged by microbes. This can affect plant growth, health, and productivity with important ecological and economic consequences. Such interactions may be beneficial or detrimental to the plant. Endophytes are fungi and/or bacteria that colonize the internal tissues of a plant without causing any immediate overt negative effect. The endophyte-host plant interactions are best described as a symbiotic continuum that ranges from symbiotic, mutualistic, commensalism, and even parasitism. Such interactions lead to the production of secondary metabolites which have varied applications in medicine, agriculture, and industry.
