External Fixation Device

An external fixation device is a surgical frame that stabilizes fractured or deformed bones from outside the body, providing support when internal implants are unsuitable or soft-tissue injury limits surgery. Surgeons insert pins or wires through the skin into the bone and connect them to rods, rings, or clamps, creating a rigid construct that maintains alignment while allowing adjustments during healing. External fixation is especially valuable for open fractures, severe swelling, bone loss, and staged orthopedic treatment because it preserves access to injured tissue. The method supports fracture healing, deformity correction, and limb reconstruction while reducing disruption of the injury site.

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.

Iris Fixation via External Pentagram Suturing

2022

The present protocol describes how a 10-0 polypropylene suture crosses the anterior surface of the iris, forming a pentagram to prevent both iris and pupil from moving toward the cornea. This can be combined with subsequent keratoplasty to cure bullous keratopathy with extensive anterior synechia of the iris.
