Mesothelial Cell Gaps

Mesothelial cell gaps are spaces or discontinuities between cells forming the mesothelium, the thin lining of serous body cavities and organs. Their size and permeability depend on cell-cell junctions, cytoskeletal organization, and inflammatory signals that can loosen the monolayer, allowing fluid, immune cells, or other materials to cross the tissue barrier. In medicine, analyzing mesothelial cell gaps helps researchers understand pleural and peritoneal inflammation, fluid accumulation, tissue repair, and cancer cell dissemination. Gap formation and closure can also serve as measurable indicators of barrier integrity in cell culture and studies of disease mechanisms.

Multicellular organisms employ a variety of ways for cells to communicate with each other. Gap junctions are specialized proteins that form pores between neighboring cells in animals, connecting the cytoplasm between the two, and allowing for the exchange of molecules and ions. They are found in a wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate species, mediate numerous functions including cell differentiation and development, and are associated with numerous human diseases, including cardiac and...
