Non-invasive Assessment

Non-invasive assessment is the evaluation of health, disease, or physiological function without penetrating the skin or removing tissue, making it valuable for safer, more comfortable clinical care. It uses external observations, imaging, sensors, and measurements such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, electrical signals, or body temperature to detect changes in anatomy or function. Clinicians use these approaches for screening, diagnosis, monitoring treatment response, and tracking disease progression while reducing infection risk and recovery time. In medicine, non-invasive assessment supports repeated measurements and can help identify problems early, although findings may require confirmation with laboratory tests or invasive procedures.

The present protocol aims at assessing cognitive-emotional functions in the basal ganglia by simultaneous neurophysiological recording of local field potentials and non-invasive brain cortical activity (EEG). The procedure is exemplified by the use of paradigms involving speech stimuli with emotional connotation or the Flanker task involving cognitive control.

The aim of the present study was to assess changes in transmission at the corticomotoneuronal synapses in humans after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. For this purpose, an electrophysiological method is introduced that allows assessment of pathway specific corticospinal transmission, i.e. differentiation of fast, direct corticospinal pathways from polysynaptic connections.

A Cancer Cell Spheroid Assay to Assess Invasion in a 3D Setting

This method evaluates cancer cell invasion from spheroids into a surrounding 3D matrix. Spheroids are generated via the hanging drop culture method and then embedded in a matrix comprised of basement membrane materials and type I collagen. Invasion out of the spheroids is subsequently monitored.

Ovarian cancer cell invasion into the mesothelial lining of the peritoneum is a dynamic process over time. Utilizing a real time analyzer, the invasive capacity of ovarian cancer cells in a spheroid-mesothelial cell co-culture model can be quantified over prolonged time periods, providing insights into factors regulating the metastatic process.
