Pain Sensitivity Evaluation

Pain sensitivity evaluation is the systematic assessment of how an individual perceives and responds to potentially painful stimuli, providing insight into sensory function and pain-related disorders. It may involve controlled thermal, mechanical, or electrical stimulation to measure detection thresholds, pain thresholds, tolerance, intensity ratings, and changes in responsiveness. In medicine, these assessments help characterize altered nociception, distinguish patterns such as hypersensitivity or reduced sensitivity, and support research on neurological conditions, chronic pain, and analgesic treatments. Standardized testing can also improve comparisons across patients and studies, contributing to more individualized diagnosis, monitoring, and pain management.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

To develop novel therapeutic interventions for the prevention and management of back pain, animal models are required to examine the mechanisms and effectiveness of these therapies from a translational perspective. The present protocol describes the BMS test, a standardized method to assess back mechanical sensitivity in the rat.
